It was a common thing many pro players did at the time, because its function is superfluous on a four-valve horn, and removing it allows the horn to resonate a bit more freely. Phil Warsop was the Director of Music Operations at Schilke Music from 1973-1975, as well as their custom mouthpiece designer. These horns from Phil’s personal collection were hand selected at the factory in Chicago and served Phil for many years in his later career as a trumpet player in many symphony orchestras throughout Michigan.
