Private Lessons, offered in-person or virtually, can greatly enhance the enjoyment of learning an instrument. The one-on-one time and attention provided by private lesson teachers is a tremendous aid to music students, whether they are just beginning their study or have been playing for years.
At Cameron's Music, you aren't merely buying lesson time by the half hour. You are investing in a relationship with a qualified, experienced, professional teacher who has the knowledge, skills, patience and individually tailored curriculum to help you soar as a musician.
With 17 newly built or remodeled state-of-the-art private studios, Cameron's Music has teachers on staff for flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, trumpet, trombone, baritone, eupohonium, tuba, French horn, violin, cello, bass, piano, guitar and voice. Most of our teachers have college degrees specializing in their instrument of choice and/or music education; all of our teachers have years of playing and teaching experience. Our teachers are available to instruct beginners, experienced players, young children, older musicians and everything in between.

Instructors
Piano Teachers
Tom Bankes
Tom Bankes began his studies on piano and composition, eventually expanding to incorporate organ and voice. He graduated from Walled Lake Northern in 2009 and went on to study at Oakland Community College before committing to music full time. He has studied with various instructors over the years, and currently is a long time student of Maestro Gerald Goslin. His studies with Maestro Goslin make him part of a chain of teacher to student that goes directly back to Ludwig van Beethoven; Beethoven taught Carl Czerny, who taught Franz Liszt, who taught Emil von Sauer, who taught Mischa Kottler, who taught Gerald Goslin, who passes that legacy on to Tom. In addition to teaching at Cameron's, he serves as Apprentice Music Director at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Redford, and preforms regularly during their Sunday morning services. He has also participated in fundraising recitals for the Livonia Symphony Orchestra and St. Andrew’s Church.
Gail Boyd
Gail is a private lesson teacher for piano, organ, and keyboard with over 30 years of teaching experience. She has taught students five years old through adult. She teaches many different styles of music and will work in any direction a student wishes to go. In addition to teaching, Gail competes along with many her students in competitions by the American Guild of Music, often obtaining first place status with her students. Gail has also be called upon to perform as an accompanist for vocal classes at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. Gail performs as an organist at Greenfield Village, at the Mill Race Historical Village in Northville, and Greenmead in Livonia.
Lee Kurche
Lee Kurche brings over twenty years experience as a music educator and music therapist to Cameron's. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education with honors from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy degree from M.S.U. She has been a private music teacher and school music educator in the area for many years and has also served as a music therapist and run several music camps. She offers recitals through the year and also teaches voice at Cameron's.
Brandon Reeves
A life-long musician, Brandon Reeves holds a Bachelor of Music from Wayne State University, where his studies ranged from jazz piano and theory, to classical percussion, songwriting, and more. Beginning with Bach and Chopin in his teens, he specializes in jazz and blues keyboard styles, including New Orleans R&B, Texas shuffle, boogie-woogie, ragtime, cocktail jazz, Gospel, and more.
Brandon’s teaching philosophy is simple: music is already there within everyone—we do not study music to develop our musicality, but to discover it. As a private teacher, he emphasizes a warm and creative environment wherein each student can discover their own capacity to be inspired, to discover the music they are passionate about, to play with relaxed self-confidence, and most importantly, to learn to hear and feel music with one’s whole being (not just the ears!)
In addition to teaching, Brandon teaches drums and percussion at at Cameron's and works professionally as a pianist, church organist, and drummer in the Detroit area.
Woodwind Teachers
Heather Koch
Heather Koch earned her Bachelor’s Degree in General and Choral Music from Michigan State University. Teaching experience and several courses in Suzuki Technique for Flute have proven valuable for instructing students as young as age 5 through High School. In addition to helping beginners, she especially enjoys teaching intermediate & advanced students wishing to improve their tone & technique and expand their repertoire. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals. Having played and studied flute for over 30 years, Heather trained under principal orchestral flutists Edwin Lenning (DSO), Israel Borouchoff (MSU), and Alexander Murray (during several years at Interlochen’s Summer Arts Camp.) She has performed in Symphonic Bands, Marching Bands, college and community Orchestras, Flute Choirs, Recorder Ensembles, Hammered Dulcimer Groups, and has a special fondness for Celtic music.
Jose Hernandez
Livonia native Jose Hernandez is a dedicated flute instructor with over 12 years experience who specializes in creating an environment that both nutures and encourages mastery of the instrument in a fun and helpful way.
Steve Wood
Steve Wood comes to Cameron's with over thirty years of teaching experience on saxophone, flute, and clarinet. He has studied at Oakland University and the University of Michigan and was awarded a Bachelors Degree from U of M in 1978. He has also taught jazz saxophone at U of M, and is currently on the faculty of the Cranbrook Academy and the Arts League of Michigan. As a performer Steve has toured Europe twice with the Paul Keller Orchestra, and has been featured on recordings produced by a number of the region's top players including Scott Gwinnell, Bill Heid, Don Mayberry, Ron English, Brad Felt, and Ed Nuccilli. He has released two recordings of his own, Unanswerable Questions on the Alembic Arts Label, and Deep Woods on Corridor Records. Steve has backed many national artists as well, including Sammy Davis Jr., Robert Goulet, Aretha Franklin, Jack Jones, the Four Tops, and the Temptations. In recent years he has worked with major artists at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, including Kenny Burrell, John Faddis, Thad Jones, John Clayton, and Mose Allison.
Brass Teachers
Tyler Schreiber
Tyler Schreiber is a talented brass specialist who hails from Livonia. He is a graduate of Franklin High School and studied brass pedagogy and music education in college. He is currently the band director at Schuchard Elementary in Utica and has taught the entire brass family at Cameron's since 2023.
Guitar Teachers
Matt Drozdowski
Matt Drozdowski has been playing music for over 25 years. He has been teaching guitar and piano at Cameron's Music since 2005. Mr. Drozdowski has also studied with world renowned concert pianist Maestro Gerald Goslin. Matt is a freelance musician who has performed all over the Detroit area with several bands and was a founding member of the Unheard. Matt continues to perform with his most recent project, Common Ground. Matt's playing styles include classical, jazz, blues, and contemporary rock and roll. His teaching style emphasizes technique and reading music, and he teaches to each student's individual needs. Matt's purpose is to give each student a solid foundation in the basics and guide them on whatever musical path they choose. Mr. Drozdowski hold recitals at Cameron's Music every year for his students to build confidence and make learning more enjoyable
Eddie Kohen
Eddie Kohen began listening to players like Ron Carter, Ray Brown, and Jimmy Garrison early in life. He fell in love with the sound of the upright bazz and all of the jazz legends. He attended the Berklee College of Music with a focus on jazz but his playing career has led him to work in all musical styles and genres. HIs jazz playing career has been influenced by the likes of Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, and John McGlauglhin, and he recently released his first album called Pulp Fusion. Along with electric and acoustic bass, Eddie teaches guitar, ukulele, and mandolin at Cameron's.
Waldon Reed
Waldon is a freelance guitarist, instructor, and composer/recording artist in the metro Detroit area. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan and his Master of Music degree in composition from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. His playing styles include classical, jazz, and classic rock/prog-rock -- all of which are reflected in his eclectic compositional style. As a student he has received numerous awards for both composing and performing. Of these awards is most notably the Music Teachers National Association Student Composition Contest (1989) where he won first place nationally for his composition 'Duo Fantasy' for flute and guitar. In addition, his composition 'Blues Emporium' was selected for the early mp3.com's 103 of the best songs you've never heard vol.2 compilation CD. To date, his music discography totals eight original music CDs -- which includes Verbum Caro an album containing unique arrangements of traditional Christmas carols. His popularity on the internet has led to CD sales on every continent of the world. Waldon is presently active as a performer, composer, recordist, and teacher. He can be heard performing locally with Steely Dan tribute act Major Dudes.
String Teachers
Halla Horn
Halla Horn is a private lesson teacher for beginner through advanced violin and viola students of all ages with over six years of experience. She is a certified K-12 music teacher and has a Bachelor's of Violin Performance and Music Education from Oakland University where she was named Outstanding Student in Instrumental Performance for 2017. Halla has over twenty years of performance experience and has performed professionally throughout Southeast Michigan, Montana, West Virginia, California, Florida, and Colorado.
Drum Teachers
Brian J. Buckmaster
Brian J. Buckmaster has taught percussion for over 20 years and at Cameron's since 1995. Brian earned his Bachelors Degree in Music Education and majored in percussion at Eastern Michigan University and then completed course work for his Masters at EMU. Since 1995 Brian has taught elementary music for the Ypsilanti Public Schools. Brian has a diverse background in music and has been involved in a variety of school and performing music organizations. Brian's drumming has taken him with performing groups to Russia, Europe and Walt Disney World in Florida.
Brian has become a requested teacher by area band directors because of his thoroughness in preparation of students in technical proficiency and in solo ensemble work. Brian has a large library of solo-ensemble pieces for his students to perform. He is very flexible in the content of his lessons and as a full-time teacher has the ability to adjust a lesson according to the interest and ability of the student. He incorporates computer technology in his lessons and keeps a running record of each students progress. On request by the parent can provide excellent references for potential new students.
